Most of us are not aware of the immense benefits of Citrus Aurantifolia popularly known as lime, osan wewe in Yoruba, ugiri in Igbo and babban leemu in Hausa. A recent study published in Nutritional Epidemiology has shown that people who add lime to their water instead of taking sugary drinks, such as soda or juice, improved their diet.

Krissy Brady a nutritionist said “drinking lime water improves digestion. Limes are acidic and they help saliva break down food for better digestion. Additionally, flavonoids in limes stimulate secretion of digestive juices. If you experience constipation, the acidity of limes can clear the excretory system and stimulate bowel activities”

According to the study, lime juice is found to be very potent in the treatment of infectious diseases and other ailments, when used alone and in combination with other herbs.

The American Society for Nutrition has encouraged reluctant water-drinkers to consume more water, adding that water with citrus fruit, such as lime, can liven up a glass of water.

The body needs water to survive and drinking enough is crucial for maintaining optimal health.

Water ensures the human body is adequately hydrated. People stay hydrated by drinking liquids and consuming foods with high water content.

Some people might find that a squeeze of lime improves the taste of the water, encouraging them to drink more of it. By drinking lime water, people can also take advantage of the many health benefits it offers.
