The Management of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) has countered reports published on some news platforms, which attributed the untimely death of one of its resident doctors, Dr Michael Umoh, who died on 17 September, 2023, to 72 hours nonstop shift, as false.
It was reported Wednesday (not by pharmanewsonline) that Dr Umoh died of continuous 3-day shift, but in a statement signed by the management of LUTH shared with Pharmanewsonline, it was explained that the doctor never had 72 hours call, but only worked 13 and 14 September, 2023.
The hospital management acknowledged it got information that Dr Umoh died on Sunday while in church with his parents, as his death was later confirmed by one of the consultants in the Neurosurgery unit.
According to the statement “The death of Dr Umoh was unfortunate but the narrative of 72 hours nonstop shift is false.
“Dr Umoh died on Sunday 17th September 2023 while in church with his parents. The management was informed, and the death was later confirmed by one of the consultants in his unit (Neurosurgery)”.
“The record from Neurosurgery unit shows that the last time he was on call was 13th and 14th September, 2023. He was not on call on the 15th, 16th and 17th (the day he died), contrary to the insinuations on social media. He was at home with his parents on the 16th and 17th September.
“Prior to this time, he was on call on the 7th and 8th September, 2023. This shows that Dr Umoh was on call for a total number of 4 days in September, 2023.”
LUTH’s management affirmed that a delegation was sent to condole with the family Wednesday, and the parents expressed their displeasure to the information circulating on social media regarding the death of their son.
The statement noted that parents of the deceased disclosed details of what may be responsible for the death of the resident doctor, but they wanted it not for public consumption.
“The parents gave the details of what they thought must have contributed to his death but pleaded that the wish of the family be respected and that the narrative is not for public consumption.
“However, the family is saddened about the misinformation regarding the death of their beloved son on social media, and other media outlets”
LUTH management described Dr Umoh as a hardworking and diligent house-officer, and a very promising young man, who will be sorely missed by his friends and colleagues.
Reacting to the sudden demise of their colleague, President, Association of Resident Doctor (ARD) LUTH Chapter, Dr Kemi Abiloye has also denied statements credited to some of their memebrs, saying exact details of the emergency response after this event are still unclear, but he was said to be taken to Reddington Hospital, where his unfortunate demise was confirmed.
She said reports of a background cardiovascular disease that can predispose to sudden cardiac death has not been confirmed either from his family or from his pre-employment medical screening records.
