The Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), Kano State, has refuted the viral allegations that one of its doctors removed a patient’s womb without her consent during childbirth.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the hospital described the claims, which surfaced during a Kaduna-based radio called ‘Brekete Family’ programme, as baseless and harmful to its reputation.
The Chief Medical Director, Dr Abdurrahman Abba Sheshe, clarified in the statement that the incident in question occurred in 2012, not 2017 as alleged, and involved a life-saving surgery following a uterine rupture that caused severe internal bleeding and the loss of the unborn child.
He emphasised that the procedure adhered to all medical protocols, including obtaining the patient’s informed consent.
“These allegations are completely unfounded,” Sheshe said. “The surgery was performed to save the patient’s life. At no point were ethical standards or professional guidelines compromised.”
Pharmanewsonline recalled that the controversy arose after a woman alleged on the ‘Berekete Family’ radio programme that she lost consciousness during childbirth at AKTH and woke up days later to discover her womb had been removed without her consent.
The hospital, however, categorically denied the claims, stating that the details of the case have been forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Health and other relevant authorities for further investigation.
AKTH called on the public to disregard the allegations and reassured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to delivering quality healthcare services.
