Anambra AHAPN Enlightens Community Women on Cervical Cancer

As a way of fulfilling its obligations to the people in its environs, the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN), Anambra State Chapter, organised a seminar on Cervical Cancer, for the women of Oji River Community, as the world celebrates World Cancer Day 2020.

The Cervical Cancer seminar, which was well attended by the participants, also featured distribution of educative materials, questions and answers session, and referral for free screening amongst others.

The Chairman of the AHAPN State Chapter Dr (Mrs) Amara Loveth Nwaka emphasised the importance of taking preventive measures to guard against the deadly disease. She said such preventive measures as healthy life style, cervical screening and vaccination will impact positively on their general health status.

She further noted that since all women are at risk of Cervical Cancer, regular cervical screening for every woman from 21 years and above cannot be over emphasized.

One of the participants, who is a survivor of Cervical Cancer narrated her story to the audience during the interactive session. She said after her mother died of the condition, said she was advised to go for screening, which was positive.

However, she explained that she commenced treatment, and at the end of treatment, she was declared free of the disease since three years ago. The AHAPN executives urged her to continue with annual screening, until she attains the age of 70, with up to three recent, consecutive negative tests and no abnormal tests in the prior 10 years.

In her own contribution, Pharm. (Mrs) Adaobi Okafor explained that vaccination is targeted at young girls before they start having sexual intercourse, while highlighting four major healthy lifestyle practices to embrace as eating healthily, avoidance of smoking, barrier contraception and avoidance of multiple sexual partners.
