NCDC Confirms 17 New cases of Lassa Fever in One Week

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed that the nation recorded 17 new cases of Lassa fever within one week, from 31 October- 6 November 2022, through its latest epidemiological report.

The report shows the demography of affected persons and states, as the new cases were obtained from five states, which are:  Ondo (9), Edo (5), Kogi (1), Benue (1), and Oyo (1) inclusive.

The statement also revealed that there had been 975 confirmed cases of the viral infection reported since the year's commencement, resulting in 177 fatalities from 26 states and an 18.2% case-fatality ratio (CFR).

Statistically, the NCDC’s report showed that of all confirmed cases, 70% were from Ondo, 18% from Edo;   4% from Kogi; 4% from Oyo, and 4% from Benue. However, the predominant age group affected was 21 to 30 years, with the male-to-female ratio for confirmed cases being 1:0.8.

The agency however observed that “The number of suspected cases has increased compared to that reported for the same period in 2021”.

While no new healthcare worker was affected in the reporting Week 44, it noted that the National Lassa fever multi-partner, multi-sectoral Technical Working Group (TWG) continues to coordinate the response activities at all levels.
