Fresh from his sixth-round knockout victory on December 19, British former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has survived a serious road traffic accident in Ogun State, Nigeria.
The crash happened along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near Sagamu, leaving Joshua with minor injuries. This incident has once again drawn attention to the growing public health concern of road traffic injuries and the need for quick and effective emergency medical care.
Reports from the Ogun State Police Command and eyewitnesses shows that the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua crashed into a stationary truck on the busy expressway. The Police spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed that investigations into the accident are ongoing.
Eyewitnesses also revealed that Joshua was travelling with three other occupants in the vehicle, while his security team followed in another car. Sadly, two passengers died instantly at the scene, showing the severity of the impact despite Joshua’s survival.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) blamed the crash on excessive speed and dangerous overtaking, which remain major causes of road accidents in Nigeria. FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide stated that five persons were involved, with two fatalities, one injured and two escaping unhurt. The deceased, identified as British nationals, were taken to a morgue in Sagamu.
This incident highlights the heavy burden road crashes place on Nigeria’s healthcare system. Emergency care, rapid rescue, early trauma assessment and prompt hospital treatment are key to saving lives after serious accidents.
The Ogun State Government has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathy to Joshua, describing the incident as a painful and unfortunate loss.
Health and road safety experts are using the incident to renew calls for strict speed control, safer overtaking practices and stronger emergency response systems, especially during periods of heavy travel. Joshua remains under medical observation at an undisclosed hospital as investigations continue and tributes pour in for the lost lives.
