The Minister of State for Health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora has given more clues about the patient with the second confirmed COVID-19 case in Nigeria, after the announcement of the case by the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, Monday morning.
Fielding questions from journalists in Lagos, Mamora disclosed that the patient, who was one of the contacts of the index case, in Ogun State, did not manifest any symptoms, as at the time he was screened.
He said: “The new case, as at the time of the screening, was not manifesting any symptoms. There was just a suspicion to screen him and he tested positive”.
Mamora, who assured the Nigerian populace that the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) in collaboration with other agencies is in control of the situation, cautioned the people against speculating rumours.
His words: “There is no cause for alarm, one thing we need to avoid is panic, we should spread facts not fears. People should abide to what they’ve been advised to do, regular hand-washing with soap and water, use of hand sanitisers, maintaining distance to whoever is coughing, and infected persons should take good care of themselves”.
He also mentioned that trailing of possible contacts of the confirmed second case will commence in earnest, as the viral infection is asymptomatic. “One thing about COVID-19 is that it’s not a respecter of anyone, and people can carry it without knowing, that is what we called asymptomatic cases. With this now, we will have to start checking other contacts of the second case that can be identified”.
The State Minister for Health was in Lagos as the keynote speaker for a 3-day training, organised by the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) with the theme: “Current Techniques in Effective Laboratory Diagnosis of Neglected Tropical Diseases”, where he declared the conference opened.
