More Spike with 1354 New Infections

There’s yet to be an end in sight to the upsurge in new cases of COVID-19 as the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control reports 1354 new infections with one death on Tuesday.

This is happening amidst high expectations for the arrival of COVID-19 Vaccines in the country, as Nigeria seeks 42 million doses for one-fifth of its population.

The Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, disclosed this at the Presidential Task Force briefing on COVID-19 on Tuesday in Abuja.

Shuaib said that the vaccine would be got through the global COVAX scheme.

NCDC Director General, Dr Chike Ihekweazu has also reiterated the commitment of the agency to intensify efforts to manage increasing cases in-country, while acknowledging support from key stakeholders including religious leaders & the media.

He made the remarks during the daily COVID-19 update as he assured the populace of the agency’s continuous update and enlightenment on the disease.

“Our discharges today include 324 community recoveries in Lagos State and 137 community recoveries in FCT managed in line with guidelines”, he disclosed via the agency’s micro site.

NCDC further revealed : “On the 5th of January 2021, 1354 new confirmed cases and 1 death was recorded in Nigeria

“Till date, 92705 cases have been confirmed, 76396 cases have been discharged and 1319 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory”.

The 1354 new cases are reported from 21 states  as follows: Lagos (712), FCT (145), Plateau (117), Kwara (81), Kaduna (54), Sokoto (39), Oyo(38), Rivers (37), Gombe (21), Enugu (20), Akwa Ibom (16), Bauchi (14), Delta (14), Ebonyi (13), Anambra (9), Taraba (8), Edo (8), Kano (3), Osun (2), Ekiti (2) and Ogun (1).
