The Federal Government has commenced the process to decriminalise attempted suicide in order to protect the mental health of suspected citizens.

This was disclosed on Thursday, in Abuja by the Minister of State for Health and Social welfare, Dr Iziaq Salako.

Salako, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Daju Kachollom S. explained that the situation would be extended to the National Assembly for necessary legislative process and assured that it would be concluded without delay.

The minister described the process as a legal and public health necessity, stating that individuals experiencing mental health crisis should receive relevant intervention rather than punishment.

Dr Salako acknowledged that legislation alone would not prevent suicide, stressing the Federal government’s commitment to strengthening mental health services, promoting early identification and intervention, expanding community-based support and fostering open conversations around mental health.
