The Health Writers Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) has announced the passing of one of its most dedicated and exemplary members, Mr Matthew Ukachunwa of New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd.
Ukachunwa reportedly transitioned to eternal rest in the early hours of Monday, 16 February, 2026, a development that has cast a shadow over Nigeria’s health reporting community and the broader media landscape.
In a statement signed by HEWAN President, Vivian Ihechu, and Secretary, Temitope Obayendo, the association described the late journalist as a pioneer member, consummate professional, and pillar of the association.
According to the statement, Ukachunwa was widely respected for his soft-spoken nature, firm convictions, and meticulous approach to journalism. Colleagues recalled his unrivaled mastery of health reporting and his commitment to professional excellence, qualities that inspired many younger journalists within the beat.
“Matthew Ukachunwa was the definition of a stickler for time. His commitment to punctuality and professional ethics was legendary. He was a man who truly knew his work and delivered it with quiet excellence,” Ihechu said.
She added that Ukachunwa was consistently present at the association’s engagements, offering constructive counsel and unwavering support. “He was never found absent at any of the association’s activities and was always prompt,” she noted.
His passing has been described as particularly emotional for members of the association, coming just days after his active participation in a capacity-building workshop organised by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) for health writers in Lagos.
At the 13 February, workshop, Ukachunwa was honoured with an ‘Early Bird’ cash prize, having arrived among the first participants, a recognition many colleagues now regard as a fitting final testament to his lifelong discipline and dedication to duty.
HEWAN extended its condolences to the family of the late journalist, the management of New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd, and the entire journalism community, praying for the repose of his soul and strength for his loved ones during the period of mourning.
Ukachunwa’s death marks the end of an era for many within the health journalism space, but his legacy of professionalism, punctuality, and quiet excellence is expected to endure.
