The Lagos State Water Corporation (LWC) has revealed its intention to improve access to portable water in the state by strengthening its relationship with USAID on safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH).
This was disclosed during the visit of USAID team to the Managing Director/CEO, LWC Engr. Muminu Adekunle Badmus, at the agency headquarters, Ijora, Lagos.
Speaking during the visit, Dr Joechim Ezeji, a water and climate change expert, said Chemonics is the main contractor for the improvement of water supply in the state.
Ezeji, who is also the leader of the visiting team, said the purpose of the visit will also include support in the improvement of the governance and regulatory framework in Lagos
Engr. Badmus in his response said: “The LWC is looking forward to continuing working with the USAID team on the safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) services towards the successful revitalisation of the project in Lagos State.”
The WASH project objectives, according to Ezeji, are to improve Lagos water service, modernise Lagos water Infrastructure, and transform Lagos Waterways Commission (LWC), governance regulation, and service provision.
“Lagos has all the requirements to ensure the success of the project due to the availability of manpower, resourceful administration and high political will, amongst others,” he added.
The team leader, however, solicited the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure a successful outcome, saying “USAID is ready to give direction through a capable and committed team”.
Recall that on 22 June 2022, USAID visited LWC for partnership in respect of a holistic revitalisation of the WASH programme to improve access to water supply in Lagos State.
Also, prior to this development USAID and the Lagos State Government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve access to safe WASH services in Lagos.
