NAFDAC, PSN, Meet with Herbal Practitioners on Safety and Toxicity Analysis

The Minister of State for Health Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, in company of the Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug, Administration and Control, NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye and the President, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria(PSN) Pharm. (Mazi) Sam Ohuabunwa, had a meeting with Traditional Medical and Herbal Practitioners, who submitted applications for COVID-19 remedies.

NAFDAC DG had announced on Tuesday that the agency had received four applications from four herbal practitioners for the evaluation of their formulations for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Speaking at the meeting, held yesterday as disclosed by the Federal Ministry of Health through its verified Twitter handle, Adeyeye explained the procedures for submission of local preparations to the herbal practitioners.

On the application processes timeline for submitting local treatment solutions, Adeyeye said  : “ NAFDAC does a toxicity test to ensure the safety of the drugs and NIPRD does scientific and clinical research before approving the drugs”.

Mamora, had earlier in the meeting advised all practitioners to submit their remedies to both NAFDAC and NIPRD for further analysis and evaluation of their products before a recommendation can be made.
