– Seizes N5 Billion Worth of Counterfeit Products
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed 150 shops in Eziukwu Market, Aba, Abia State, during a two-day enforcement operation held on 16 and 17 December, 2024.
The agency disclosed this in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, detailing the discovery of large-scale production and distribution of counterfeit and expired products. These include beverages, carbonated drinks, wines, spirits, vegetable oils, and revalidated food items such as noodles, powdered milk, and yoghurt.
According to the statement, counterfeit products destroyed during the operation were estimated to be worth N5 billion.
NAFDAC’s South-East Zone Director, Dr Martins Iluyomade, described Eziukwu Market as a hub for counterfeit and substandard goods. He expressed concerns over the persistence of these illegal activities despite a previous agreement signed by market leaders in December 2023 to expose counterfeiters and curb such practices.
He said, “Eziukwu Market remains a hotspot for counterfeit and substandard products. It is disheartening that these activities continue unabated despite efforts and commitments by market leaders to address the issue.”
The agency’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reiterated NAFDAC’s zero-tolerance policy toward the production and distribution of counterfeit goods. She emphasised the agency’s unwavering commitment to public health and its determination to find a lasting solution to the menace of counterfeit products in the market.
