Nigeria on Tuesday recorded 503 new cases of COVID-19, with total infections put at 29,879.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) revealed this in a tweet via its official handle.
As usual, Lagos, the country’s nerve centre of the disease reported the highest number of new cases among the states with 154, closely followed by Ondo State with unusual spike of 79 infections.
Other states with new cases include Edo (54), FCT (41), Enugu (34), Rivers (30), Benue (24), Osun (20), Kaduna (15), Kwara (13), Abia (9), Borno (8), Plateau (6), Taraba (5), Ogun (3), Kano (3), Kebbi (2), Nasarawa (2), Bayelsa (1), and Gombe (1).
The health agency revealed that “Till date, 29879 cases have been confirmed, 12108 cases have been discharged and 669 deaths have been recorded in 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory”.
While COVID-19 cases have continued to rise as the country remains in the second phase of relaxing Coronavirus lockdown, schools and religious places are still shut down, but domestic airlines are expected to resume on Wednesday
Meanwhile, members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 have repeatedly advised Nigerians to stick to health protocols such as social distancing in public spaces, wearing masks, and frequent handwashing.
The novel Coronavirus has killed at least 539,620 people worldwide since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP at 1900 GMT on Tuesday.
At least 11,693,770 cases of Coronavirus have been registered in 196 countries and territories. Of these, at least 6,145,500 are now considered recovered.
The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.
Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.
The past 24 hours saw 4,466 new deaths recorded and 168,927 new cases. The United States registered the highest number of deaths (733) followed by Brazil (620) and Mexico (480).
