The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwifes – Federal Health Institutions are set to commence a 7-day nationwide warning strike following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum given to the government.
The National Chairman of NANNM-FHI, Morakinyo Rilwan, earlier in July had expressed his disappointment over the recent allowances review for nurses as it fails to address the key concerns and welfare of its members and gave the government the ultimatum to review and meet their demands.
The allowances were tagged insufficient for both night shifts and weekend shifts. The association also expressed concern over the inadequacy of call duty allowances, noting that nurses on call often have to sacrifice their personal time and be available to respond to emergencies.
The association via its social media handle listed some of the nurses’ demands which are creation of department of nursing at the Federal Ministry of Health, upward review of shift duty allowances, special allowance for specialist nurses, secured and conducive work environment for nurses, equipping hospitals with modern equipment to curb medical tourism abroad.
The National Secretary of the association, Com. Enya Agatha Osinachi, through a news release has ordered that the strike action be total and there should be no skeletal nursing services in any federal health institutions across the country.
The strike is to commence July 29 by 12 midnight.
