The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has blacklisted six foreign universities for Pharmacy training programme, due to the failure of graduates from the institutions to demonstrate sufficient capacity as trained pharmacists.
PCN Registrar, Pharm. Babashehu Ahmed made the disclosure to Pharmanewsonline in an exclusive interview, adding that all the universities are within West Africa.
He also revealed other disciplinary activities the council has been able to implement since the Pharmacy Act was gazetted, such as the suspension of four pharmacists for varying number of years depending on the degree of offences, and the reprimand of two pharmacists for various infractions.
Ahmed further told our correspondent that 45 pharmacists are currently being investigated for various offences by the Investigating Panel of the PCN.
According to him “Six (6) foreign universities have been blacklisted for Pharmacy training programme owing to failure of their graduates to demonstrating sufficient capacity as trained pharmacists.
“All the universities are within West Africa. They are as follows:
“Institute Bilingual Superior University, Togo; International University, Bamenda, Cameron or any other University in Bamenda; Hill City University, Monrovia, Liberia; All Universities in Benin Republic; INTA University of Togo; and St. Monica University, Cameroon”
The Registrar cautioned parents and guardians to always endeavour to confirm the status of foreign universities running Pharmacy programme from PCN before sending their ward(s) to such institutions, which may be counterproductive at the end of the day.
The PCN scribed affirmed that the new law has served as an effective instrument in handling all litigations, as well as enhanced the drive in the implementation of the National Drug Distribution Guidelines.
Other regulatory activities of the council since the approval of the Pharmacy Act, he mentioned are ” Closure of 5,130 unregistered facilities in 2022 by the National Enforcement Team; Reconfiguration of the Governing Council; and Effective regulations for all stakeholders in the pharmaceutical sector including Online Pharmacy regulations, registration and training for pharmaceutical and sales representatives”.
