The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) has concluded a robust five-day enforcement exercise in Rivers and Bayelsa States, aimed at sanitising the pharmaceutical landscape and protecting public health. The operation, which took place from 13 to 18 July, targeted illegal drug outlets and those operating in breach of established regulations.
During the exercise, PCN enforcement teams visited a total of 897 premises across both states. This comprehensive compliance check covered 332 pharmacies and 565 Patent and Proprietary Medicine Shops (PMSs).
The intensified efforts resulted in the sealing of 642 premises found to be operating outside regulatory guidelines. This figure comprises 185 pharmacies and 457 patent and proprietary medicine shops (PMSs). In addition to the sealed premises, nine pharmacies were issued compliance directives, requiring them to address specific regulatory infractions within a stipulated timeframe.
This enforcement drive underscores PCN’s unwavering commitment to its mandate of regulating and controlling the practice of Pharmacy in all its aspects and ramifications. By ensuring that only qualified personnel operate registered and approved premises, PCN continues to safeguard the general public against the dangers of drug abuse, substandard medicines, and quackery, thereby promoting optimal public health outcomes.
