Pharmacy technologist gets jail term for operating illegal pharmacy

The Federal High Court sitting in Abeokuta, Ogun state has sentenced Pharmacy Technologist, Dongo Osinilu to two years imprisonment for operating an illegal pharmacy.

Onilu was sentenced to 2-year jail term by Justice Ibrahim Watila after the Pharmacy Technician was found guilty of the charges against.

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, had charged the convict to the court for breaking the government seal after his medicine store was closed down by the Council ’s inspection team.

Although Osinilu contended in his defence that PCN lacked the legal authority to regulate him as a member of the National Association of Pharmaceutical Technologists and Pharmacy Technicians, Justice Watila found him guilty of the five counts charges against him.

The Pharmacy Technician was subsequently convicted of all the five counts against him and consequently sentenced to two-year imprisonment.

According to the PCN, “The first charge stipulates six-month imprisonment with an option of N10,000 fine. The second charge carries one-year imprisonment without an option of fine.

“The third charge stated two-year imprisonment without an option of fine; while the fourth, one-year imprisonment was also without an option of fine.

The fifth charge also carries one-year imprisonment without an option of fine,” .
According to the court ruling, the sentences are expected to run concurrently, while the defendant would forfeit all the confiscated drugs to the Federal Government.
