The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria-Young Pharmacists Group (PSN-YPG) has lauded the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, for her immense efforts in safeguarding public health through the elimination of counterfeit medicines in Nigeria.

In a statement made available to Pharmanewsonline, National Chairman (PSN-YPG), Tekena George, described Prof. Adeyeye as a fearless guardian of public health. He continued; “Under her leadership, NAFDAC has restored public confidence in its regulatory framework and intensified efforts to combat substandard pharmaceuticals.”

This encomium follows NAFDAC’s recent crackdown on three major illegal drug markets—Idumota (Lagos State), Onitsha (Anambra State), and Ariaria (Aba, Abia State). The statement mentions that these markets have long been identified as hubs for the distribution of counterfeit, expired, and improperly stored medicines, posing severe health risks to millions of Nigerians.

“By shutting down these illicit drug hubs and disrupting their supply chain, Prof. Adeyeye is ensuring that only properly regulated, high quality medicines reach Nigerians. This is a victory for public health and a step toward eliminating dangerous pharmaceuticals from circulation” Pharm George underscored.

Beyond enforcement actions, the association also applauded NAFDAC’s destruction of counterfeit and expired medicines worth N4.7 billion in the South-South region. “This bold move sends a strong message that public health cannot be compromised for financial gain,” he emphasized.

Furthermore, the group highlighted Prof. Adeyeye’s role in promoting local drug production, which has reduced reliance on imported pharmaceuticals and bolstered Nigeria’s medicine security. According to the National chairman, such policies are essential for ensuring access to high-quality medicines and fostering economic resilience within the nation’s pharmaceutical sector.
