Medical doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), have decried the massive loss of lives from the Benue herdsmen attack on residents of the state, which has led to the death of over 200 people in the Yelewata community and environs.

NARD has also lamented poor insecurity of health workers and infrastructure in the state, amidst the communal clash, which has resulted to the death of a young pharmacist, Matthew Lormba.

NARD President, Dr Zenith Tope Osundara made this remarks in a statement on Monday, calling on the state and federal governments to rise to the rescue of residents of the state, by restoring law and order in the area.

Osundara, further condemned the development, which he described as an opportunity for miscreants to unleash terror on the people and health workers in the community. He said such tragic events serve as constant reminder of the failures of the government towards protecting the life of workers at both the state and federal level in which the healthcare system is not left out.

According to him, this attack which happened on Sunday, has resulted in complaints, absenteeism, and trauma in the workers and their unwillingness to work as they are also concerned about their safety.

The bloodshed, the NARD President noted, has also brought about hike in food prices, food production decline, shortage of food supply and malnutrition in children.

He therefore charged government at all levels, especially the northern central and north eastern part of Nigeria to implement security measures that ensures the situation does not get out of control and stop the killings.
