Rotary International District 9111 recently hosted a grand Rotary Foundation Fundraising Dinner and Dance in honour of Rtn. Prince Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi, the celebrated Doyen of Rotary District Governors in Nigeria
The event, held at the MUSON Centre, Lagos, drew past and present Rotary leaders, distinguished Nigerians, philanthropists, corporate executives and family members, all united in celebrating a man whose decades-long service footprint resonates across Nigeria and beyond.
The evening opened with a keynote tribute by Dr (Mrs) Dere Awosika, who described Prince Adelusi-Adeluyi as a Rotarian of uncommon honour, integrity and strategic foresight. She praised his humility and deep commitment to humanitarian service, noting that his influence spans public service, pharmacy, governance and civil society leadership.

Awosika emphasised that his life embodies the core ideals of Rotary, service, leadership and humanity. According to her, his dedication continues to inspire leaders across generations, making him a model of service-driven excellence in and outside the Rotary movement.
Prince Adelusi-Adeluyi’s journey in Rotary began in 1969 when he joined the Rotary Club of Ikeja. By 1977/78, he had risen to serve as Club President, marking the beginning of a distinguished leadership trajectory that would place him firmly in Rotary’s history books.
His election as District Governor-elect of the erstwhile District 210 in 1980 signalled the emergence of a transformative leader. When Rotary International District 911 was created in 1982, he became the first Nigerian to hold the office of District Governor, overseeing the 1982/83 Rotary year with outstanding distinction.
During his governorship, he travelled extensively across the country, promoting Rotary ideals and strengthening service structures. His tenure resulted in the formation of 34 new Rotary Clubs in one year, expanding Rotary’s reach into all six geopolitical zones and earning him a Presidential Commendation from President Shehu Shagari.
His outstanding achievements were recognised at the 1983 Rotary International Convention in Toronto, where District 911 was celebrated as the most vibrant Rotary district in the world. This placed Nigeria firmly on the global Rotary map and cemented his status as the Doyen of all District Governors, past, present and future.
Today, Nigeria is home to six Rotary Districts with a combined membership of more than 15,000 Rotarians. This growth is widely attributed to the strong foundation laid by Adelusi-Adeluyi’s visionary leadership over four decades ago.
His contributions, however, extend well beyond Nigeria’s borders. He has represented multiple Rotary International Presidents at global conferences across several continents and served as a trainer at the International Assembly for incoming District Governors in two consecutive years. He has also contributed significantly to Rotary International committees and is recognised as a Major Donor to the Rotary Foundation.
A passionate advocate for polio eradication, his efforts align with Rotary International’s most enduring humanitarian campaign. In recognition of his impact, the Rotary House in Ikeja GRA bears his name—“Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi House”—a lasting symbol of his service legacy.
The celebration at MUSON Centre featured a vibrant mix of red-carpet moments, cultural performances, goodwill messages and a ceremonial presentation to the honouree. One of the highlights of the evening was the launch of the Julius Adelusi-Adeluyi Named Gift Endowment Fund, designed to bolster the Rotary Foundation’s humanitarian projects globally.
Beyond Rotary, Prince Adelusi-Adeluyi stands out as a distinguished pharmacist, lawyer, former Minister of Health, pioneer President of the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy, Chairman of the MTN Foundation and a respected leader in private sector development and public service reform. His numerous honours, including a Papal Knighthood and an honorary Doctor of Laws, speak to a life marked by excellence and service.
The event was not just a dinner, it was a celebration of an extraordinary national treasure whose legacy continues to shape service, leadership and humanitarian advancement in Nigeria and across the Rotary world.
