Tinubu Approves Recruitment of Health Workers for Correctional Centres

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to strengthen healthcare services in correctional facilities across Nigeria. This move aims to bridge gaps in medical care for inmates and enhance the capacity of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by Babatunde Alao, special asistant to the Minister of Interior on Media. According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, confirmed the approval, emphasising the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of inmates.

In addition to the recruitment, Tunji-Ojo announced that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) will deploy medical doctors to correctional centres as part of their service year to support healthcare delivery. He also disclosed an extension of service for retiring medical personnel under NCoS to mitigate immediate shortages.

“This initiative not only enhances healthcare for inmates but also provides employment opportunities for medical professionals, addressing both healthcare gaps and unemployment challenges,” Tunji-Ojo stated.

Beyond healthcare reforms, the Minister highlighted the renovation of the Kuje Correctional Centre, which now features upgraded facilities, including new cells, improved water supply, and a modern hospital. He described these efforts as a demonstration of President Tinubu’s commitment to long-term corrections sector reforms.

Tunji-Ojo further revealed the approval for the establishment of a National Paramilitary Academy, which will offer degree programs in paramilitary studies, similar to the Nigerian Defence Academy, to boost national security training.

On visa issuance, he announced the introduction of an online application system, ensuring that all Nigerian visas are processed within 48 to 72 hours. This digital transformation aims to streamline immigration procedures and enhance service efficiency.
