Tinubu Converts Gombe General Hospital to Federal Medical Centre

The General Hospital, Kumo, in Gombe State has been formally converted to a Federal Medical Centre (FMC), following approval by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The development, which was requested by the Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.

This was announced in a press statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on Sunday.

According to the statement, the newly established Kumo FMC becomes the second federal health institution in the state, after the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, which was formerly a Federal Medical Centre before its upgrade. Onanuga explained that the decision is part of the Federal Government’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery in the Northeast, due to the increasing indices in poor maternal and neonatal health cases.

“The Kumo Federal Medical Centre will serve as a tertiary health hospital, contribute to the training of medical personnel, and boost healthcare services in Gombe State and the Northeast generally,” Mr Onanuga stated.

He further disclosed that President Tinubu granted approval for the conversion based on the need to tackle maternal and neonatal mortality rates in the region. President Bola Tinubu concluded by commended Governor Yahaya for his commitment to the welfare of the people of Gombe State.

According to the statement, with this development, the Federal Government aims to enhance healthcare service delivery, expand access to tertiary health services, and contribute to the training of healthcare professionals in the region.
