The World Health Organisation (WHO) has expressed deep regret over the United States of America’s announcement of its intention to withdraw from the organisation.
Director General of WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, emphasised the important role the USA has played in global health efforts and called for a reconsideration of the decision.
Ghebreyesus, in a statement on its X account highlighted America’s efforts in safeguarding the health and security of Americans and the global population. It also noted the country’s significant contributions in addressing the root causes of diseases, detecting and responding to health emergencies, often in dangerous or remote locations.
According to him, The United States, a founding member of WHO since 1948, has been instrumental in shaping the organisation’s policies and initiatives, alongside 193 other member states. WHO noted the historic achievements of the partnership, stating, “For over seven decades, WHO, and the USA have saved countless lives and protected people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication.”
Ghebreyesus also highlighted the mutual benefits derived from this collaboration, noting the significant contributions of American institutions to WHO’s work over the years. He added that these institutions have in turn benefitted from the organisation’s initiatives, particularly in health research and emergency response efforts.
He acknowledged the extensive reforms WHO has undertaken over the past seven years to enhance accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact. Dr Ghebreyesus noted that these reforms were achieved with the active participation of the United States and other member states, further underscoring the importance of a continued collaboration.
Expressing hope for a resolution, WHO stated, “We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe.”
The USA’s announcement has sparked widespread concern among global health experts, who warned of potential setbacks to international health collaborations. Many believe the withdrawal could weaken global efforts to address emerging health challenges, including disease outbreaks and health emergencies.
