The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says Nigeria has confirmed her first two cases of Omicron variant of the novel Corona Virus in the country among South African travelers, who came into Nigeria last week.

In a press release announcing the development, the NCDC Director General, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, disclosed that the agency confirmed two cases of Omicron, also known as B.1.1.529 lineag, through routine travel test required of all international travelers and genomic sequencing at the NCDC.

He further explained that retrospective sequencing from previous samples collected in October also confirmed cases among travelers into the country.

He said: “Genomic sequencing of positive cases from routine day- two test for all travelers to Nigeria identified two cases of Omicron variant among travelers from South Africa who arrived in Nigeria in the last week.

“Retrospective sequencing of the previously confirmed cases among travelers to Nigeria also identified the Omicron variant among the sample collected in October 2021”, he stated.

Adetifa, also mentioned that the two recent cases were linked to clinical care and other activities, as the agency has commenced contact tracing and has also contacted the country of the affected persons for proper contact tracing to begin.
