Front-line health workers in the line of duty

As the nation battles the containment of the deadly virus infection, 75 health workers have contracted the infection in the line of duty, says the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

This comes as the nation recorded its highest deaths of 27 patients in a single day last week.
Speaking on the development, the Director General, NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu expressed his grief over the fatality rate, saying each death is tragic occurrence for the agency.

Ihekweazu who made the disclosure in a televised interview on Tuesday advised all health workers to maintain high level of suspicion in the line of duty as every patient is a suspect.

He said: “In the last one week, 75 health care workers were infected, but we can reduce this risk.
“Every death recorded is a tragic occurrence and our health workers are working extremely hard to prevent this.

“For healthcare workers, please maintain a high index of suspicion at all times. We need you alive and well,” the DG noted.

Ihekweazu revealed that the United Kingdom variant of the virus has been discovered in five samples from Osun State and one from Kwara State.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has placed health workers on priority list of people to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it arrive the country.

The Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Faissal Shuaib, disclosed that Nigeria is expecting 16 million doses of Astrazeneca vaccine this month.

He explained that this would replace the 100,000 Pfizer vaccine earlier being expected.

Shuaib said, “The African Union Commission through the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team portfolio, has approved approximately 41m doses of a combination of Pfizer/BioNTech, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines in March/April 2021”.
