The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has got a new Director General in the person of Gambo Gumel Aliyu.
Aliyu, whose appointment was approved by President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, for an initial term of four years, is an epidemiologist and public health specialist.
Prior to his appointment, he was the Chief of Party for the Nigeria Indicator and Impact Survey (NAIIS). A native of Jigawa State, he attended Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) of Zaria, Nigeria, where he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) in 1995, and later proceeded to the University of Maryland, for his PhD in Epidemiology in 2012.
He succeeds the outgoing head of the agency, Sani Aliyu, whose tenure runs until July 2020 but resigned to pursue other aspirations.
Records showed that he also worked as the Country Director for University of Maryland programmes in Nigeria.
Also an Associate Professor in the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine, he has got several research works in his name, including HIV Epidemiology, HIV-TB Epidemiology, Multi-drug resistant TB, HIV Surveillance, Malaria Surveillance, etc.
