Lagos Shuts Diagnostic Centre Over Unauthorised COVID-19 Tests
Officials of Lagos State, sealing an unaccredited facility.

The Lagos State Government has sealed off Afriglobal Medicare, a private diagnostic centre along Mobolaji Bank-Anthony Way, Ikeja, for allegedly conducting COVID-19 tests without government approval.

The exercise carried out by the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency, HEFAMAA, was done barley two weeks after the same agency sealed Acouns Medical Lab for a similar offence of conducting illegal COVID-19 tests.

Speaking on the development, Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi said the facility was shut for violating the regulation on the use of rapid diagnostic test for COVID-19, as it is prohibited in the state.

Abayomi explained further that unapproved facilities are not allowed to conduct COVID-19 tests in the state, as they “could threaten the health and well being of the citizenry.”

He urged citizens of the state to visit only the seven newly accredited private diagnostic centres in addition to other public owned centres for their COVID-19 tests.

The commissioner listed the seven centres as follows: Total Medical Services, SynLab, 54 Gene, Medbury Medical Services, Biologix Medical Services, 02 Medical Services and Clina Lancent Laboratories.

He said: “The laboratories were selected and approved by the State Ministry of Health to carry out COVID-19 test after a rigorous accreditation and validation process by HEFAMAA and the Lagos State Bio-Bank”.

Dr Abiola Idowu, executive secretary, HEFAMAA, stated that government will not condone acts whereby health facilities engage in COVID-19 testing without following due process, adding that only private laboratories accredited by the State government are allowed to carry out COVID-19 tests.
