The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has said it is closely monitoring the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed after its recent industrial action.

The Nurses body made this disclosure through its social media handle.

The association, under its Federal Health Institutions (FHI) arm, had embarked on a nationwide strike following the expiration of a 15-day ultimatum issued to government.

The strike, which commenced on 30 July, was suspended in early August after both parties reached a consensus.

As part of the resolution, NANNM agreed to suspend the strike on the condition that government immediately begins the implementation of the agreed terms, while ensuring that no nurse or midwife is victimised for participating in the action.

NANNM also directed its members to resume duties without delay, pending full compliance with the MoU.

The association’s core demands include the gazetting of the nurses’ scheme of service, upward review of professional allowances and a new salary structure.

Other demands of the association are mass recruitment of nurses across federal health facilities, and the creation of a dedicated nursing department within the Federal Ministry of Health.

NANNM has stated that it will continue to hold government accountable to the timelines agreed in the MoU, warning that failure to deliver on the promises may trigger fresh industrial actions in the health sector.
