The Pharmaceutical Association of Nigerian Students (PANS) is set to hold the first of its kind Annual Pharmanews Interschool Debate Competition on 7&9 September, 2021, during the forthcoming PANS National Conference, at University of Uyo.
The PANS Pharmanews Interschool Debate Competition tagged “Unleash-21” is said to feature great minds from various schools of Pharmacy across Nigeria coalescing to propel them for better career in Pharmacy
Disclosing the rationale behind the debate, the PANS President, Precious A. Umoren, said there is a need to equip students with the knowledge of the roles of pharmacists, in order for them to enlighten the masses on the importance of pharmacists in the health sector as well as their accessibility.
He highlighted the debate topics to include:” The health sector can thrive very well without pharmacists; Mass exodus of pharmacists to foreign countries; pharmacists negligence of pharmacy oath to be blamed not government; increased mortality rate in Nigeria occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic; negligence of traditional medicine; treatment failures: A result of wrong diagnosis not drug therapy problems”.
He explained that he and his team came up with these debate topics because there is need for the investigation of the status of traditional medicines in Nigeria as well as the evaluation in other African countries.
Umoren also noted that the quality of healthcare in Nigeria has to be improved and this has to be done through innovative thinking platforms such as the debate competition.
