The race for National Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has continued to gain momentum, with two pharmacists, Kingsley Ekwunife and Ndukwe Uma Ndukwe, intensifying their campaigns ahead of Friday’s election at the society’s 99th Annual National Conference in Awka, Anambra State.
The contest, which has drawn considerable interest among delegates attending the conference, will see one of the two aspirants emerge as the society’s next National Secretary, succeeding the incumbent, Pharmacist Gafar Madehin.
Both candidates have been actively canvassing for support among members of the society, using the ongoing conference as an opportunity to reach out to delegates and present their respective aspirations for the position.
The election is scheduled to be held on Friday, 6 November, following the society’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where members are expected to decide who takes over the administrative position.
The intensity of the contest is already evident across the conference venue and other locations hosting delegates. As of press time, campaign posters bearing the photographs and messages of both candidates were conspicuously displayed at the entrance and virtually every nook and cranny of the International Convention Centre, Awka, venue of the conference.
The campaign materials were also visible at the entrances of some hotels accommodating delegates, a move by both contenders to attract the attention and secure the support of delegates ahead of the election.
The position is particularly important to the administration of the PSN, as the National Secretary plays a central role in the society’s coordination, documentation, communication and implementation of decisions reached by its leadership. The outcome of Friday’s election is therefore expected to determine who will assume responsibility for the society’s secretariat and help drive its administrative activities during the next tenure.
The contest comes at a significant period for the PSN, which is preparing to celebrate its centenary in 2027, having been established in 1927.
Pharm. Ekwunife hails from Ebenebe in Anambra State and has held many positions in organised pharmacy activities, including Vice-Chairman of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists, Nigeria; member of the planning committee of the 2026 PSN’s 99th Annual National Conference; and one-time Social Secretary of PSN Lagos State Chapter. He also serves as the deputy director of Pharmacy at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos.
Pharm. Ndukwe, on the other hand, has extensive leadership experience across various pharmaceutical bodies. He has served as Assistant National Secretary for both the PSN and ACPN, National PRO for the Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) and Editorial Board Secretary for the FIP African Pharmacists Forum.
