We are in the age of information and information technology. This presents enormous opportunities for young health professionals to upskill or reskill in order to achieve new heights of influence, impact and income. This also presents some challenges – advancement in technology is threatening job opportunities and roles traditionally played by healthcare professionals. In other words, young professionals have a choice: to develop new skills that will help them thrive in our ever-changing world or face the consequences of their inaction.

Below are seven highly-needed skills in our world today that young health professionals can develop:

Data analysis

According to Wikipedia, data analysis is a process of inspecting, cleansing, transforming, and modelling data with the goal of discovering useful information, informing conclusions, and supporting decision-making. A data analyst is a person whose job is to gather and interpret data in order to solve a specific problem. The role includes plenty of time spent with data, but entails communicating findings too.

Effective data analysts possess a combination of technical skills and leadership skills. Technical skills include knowledge of database languages such as SQL, R, or Python; spreadsheet tools such as Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets; and data visualization software such as Tableau or Qlik. Mathematical and statistical skills are also valuable to help gather, measure, organize, and analyse data.

Computer coding

Computer coding is the use of computer programming languages to give computers and machines a set of instructions on what actions to perform. It is how humans communicate with machines. It is what allows us to create computer software like programmes, operating systems, and mobile applications.

Software developers conceive of, design, and build computer programmes. Some develop new applications for mobile or desktop use, while others build underlying operating systems. Either way, software developers identify user needs, build programmes, test out new software, and make improvements. Working closely with computer programmers, software developers fill crucial roles in the computer systems, health, manufacturing, finance, and software publishing industries.

Software product management

At its core, product management is about making a product the best it can be. That may entail considering market demand, conducting surveys and potential user tests, acting as a liaison between developers and designers assigned to the product. Especially if you are working on a technical product, having the ability to understand and speak tech terminology will make you more successful.

A software product manager heads and manages the software product management department. They oversee and overview the specialisation, goals, structure, and expectations of the software product. That also includes the planning and monitoring required for producing the ideal software.
